Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation Vs. Healthy Mix Serum Review

I recently had a bit of a makeup dilemma, I had completely run out of fair toned foundations! Rummaging through my makeup bags all I could find were colours that match me when I'm tanned. I decided I wanted to try something new and had heard a lot of good things about the Bourgois Healthy Mix foundation! Faced with the choice between the original foundation and the more lightweight serum, along with the prospect of 'buy one get one half price' I grabbed both! Here is a little review of my thoughts..

The Product

The original foundation is said to include lots of lovely fruit extracts to improve the look and feel of your skin;
  • Apricot > radiance
  • Melon > hydration
  • Apple > antioxidant
  • Ginger > energy

The foundation also boasts a breathable formulae and provides 8 hours of moisture to your skin, making this a win win, looks good when it's on and helps your skin look better over time! The foundation is lightly fragranced with a fresh fruity smell, however this is very faint and fades pretty much right away.

The newer Healthy Mix Serum is said to have these qualities;
  • Anti-fatigue effect (this one drew me in straight away!)
  • 16 Hour Radiance Boost
  • These are achieved by the mix of litchi, goji berries and pomegranates!

The Shades

I picked up the original foundation in the shade 51 Light Vanilla and the serum in the shade 52 Vanilla.

The Coverage

The coverage on the original foundation is medium but definitely very buildable. I found it took a while longer to blend out than other foundations I've tried and doesn't feel particularly lightweight however it looks beautiful when it's on! The coverage on the serum however was much more of a light/medium coverage, perfect for those 'I'm having a good skin day and I'm going to embrace it' kind of days!

The Finish

The original foundation boasts a semi-matte/dewy finish, the end effect is a very natural 'second-skin' type of look. The finish on the serum is marketed as being 'semi-matte', however in my opinion it is far more dewy/luminous in appearance - quite similar to the Nars Sheer Glow foundation.

The Results

As high street foundations go, the Bourgois healthy mix original foundation is pretty good. One thing that I'm not hot on when it comes to both foundations is that there is no SPF. This isn't awful for the colder months, but when the sun comes out wear with caution over a sunscreen or SPF induced day cream!

If you were looking for a more natural, low coverage effect I would recommend the serum. I think I prefer the overall look and feel of the serum compare to the original foundation, however if you need a little more coverage the original foundation is beautiful too. I wouldn't recommend either of these products if you're not about that glowy look or have problems with very oily skin. However I can honestly say Bourgois foundations are officially my favourite high street foundations. Even over Rimmel's Wake me up. Never thought I'd see the day!

  1. Brilliant review & comparison. I've been toying with the idea of buying one of these & having read this, think I will try the original Healthy Mix!

  2. I love the heathy mix foundation. I've always wondered what the difference was with the serum so I'm glad I read this. I need more coverage so I went with the right choice. It's such a good range though i love how it's quite a dewy finish

  3. This is such an interesting post !! I have the serum and really love it; I find i can build it quite easily to a good coverage & I wear it on work days when I don't want to wear my chanel or estee lauder! It's interesting that you say that it's similar to Nars Sheer Glow because I've always been a bit worried to spend a lot of money on it and then not like the outcome - especially as my skin is prone to looking a little shiny throughout the day, however I really like the serum finish so maybe I will indulge into the Sheer Glow!! - Millie

    1. Sheer Glow is my all time favourite foundation, I would definitely recommend it if you love a natural dewy finish! If you like the Healthy Mix serum I can guarantee you'll love Sheer Glow!

  5. Wow this was such an informative and helpful post. I bought the serum version a while back thinking it was the original but was disappointed with the coverage and with a slightly oily skin type, the dewiness was a bit too much. I have since learned to like it but I still need to try the original one - it sounds more me!

  6. Great post! I recently picked up the Healthy Mix serum but found it to be too sheer. I think I may give the original Healthy Mix foundation a try next!
