The Best & Worst Fake Tans of 2014

I am a major sunless tanning addict. I love my skin best when it's bronzed, I feel so healthy and exotic and I-just-got-back-from-holiday-honest-y. So I thought that I should do a few mini reviews on my fav (and not so fav) tanning products of 2014, enjoy!

The Best

Xen Tan Absolute Luxe Dark Tanning Lotion

This tan is insane. I have repurchased this twice and would not hesitate to purchase it a third time! The clay-like formulae is incredibly easy to apply and will not streak no matter how darn streak-prone you are! (For me, that's very!) It does describe itself as 'ultra dark' which I was initially put off by, but it really isn't as dark as it makes out to be (thank god!) The finish itself is olive-toned in colour which makes it look very natural. I would definitely recommend this tan to anyone!

Xen Tan Ultra Dark Luxe Tanning Lotion

St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Lotion

St. Tropez are brilliant at making all-round fake tans. I would describe this as a very good, simple, easy to use, no-muss-no-fuss fake tan. Unfortunately like all St. Tropez products this does carry the oh so distinctive biscuity smell more than some of the more luxury brands. However, the finish is a lovely, warm colour, it's just the right shade for it to still look natural and it doesn't go streaky when applied properly. Other fake tans by St. Tropez that I have tried (and used up which is why they're not in this review) are the St. Tropez Dark Bronzing Mousse and the Gradual Tan, which were just brilliant and I may do reviews of in the near future!

Rodial Brazilian Tan Light & Clear

Que perhaps some of the most excellent subtle golden tans around! These babies have undergone a massive discount on the Rodial site from around £40 to just £10! I highly suggest you buy some now before they're all gone! Possibly the best thing about these tans is that you can WEAR THEM OUTSIDE OF THE HOUSE!?! Yes, you did read correctly. These tans do not smell, at all, not even in the morning after you've worn it all night. Neither, do these tans look as though you are wearing fake tan that you've not washed off on your body. They give a lovely glow to the skin which looks incredible. As in, no makeup needed incredible. I can not rave about this product enough, I will definitely be trying the dark version of this tan so stay tuned for a review on that if I can still get my mitts on one!

The Worst

Dove Summer Glow Gradual self-tanner

Nope. Just nope. Nice idea, but nope. This gradual tanner is undoubtedly moisturizing and inexpensive, but unfortunately those are just about it's only plus points. One word, streaky. You can exfoliate as though you were taking off an entire layer of your skin and proceed to apply this with a brand new tanning mitt with the utmost precision, and you will still wake up embarrassingly streaky. Not to mention the smell. Oh lord, the smell. Think gross tacky biscuity fake tan smell that we all know and hate, now multiply that by ten. You will not only need to clean your bedsheets, but completely replace them.

Xen Tan Luminous Gold Gel

This is the product that I bought to replace my first Rodial Tan whence I had run out and it was sold out on the website. I was looking for a subtle golden glowy fake tan, just like the Rodial. As I had previously tried and absolutely fell in love with Xen Tan's Absolute Luxe Dark Lotion, I felt as though I trusted the brand enough to buy a second product from the sight. There weren't that many reviews of this product online as it is one of their less known sunless tanning products, so I had to kind of play it by ear. The description sounded nice, so I thought, what the hell, I'm sure it will be fine. Nope. The product is supposed t have a subtle sparkle effect. THAT SH*T IS FULL ON GLITTER. You are left with weird glittery chunks all over your body and that looks good on no one. Luckily after one-two washes this goes away (which raises the question of why was it in there anyway?) The consistantsy of the formulae is watery. Like, put a blob on your skin and it will straight up slide off. Because of the consistency it also takes a lot longer to dry. I think it was just a little too pricey for the end result.

Xen Tan Luminous Gold Gel

Rimmel Instant Tan

I have heard a lot of people raving about this and I think the reason that I don't like it is more to do with my personal preferences. I don't really see the point of instant tan. I would much rather tan over night, shower in the morning and have a nice golden glow for the whole week and not have to worry about being caught of guard and pale. I do get that sometimes when you go out it's nice to be a little bit darker and instant tan is an express way of achieving this, but after trying this product I really wasn't satisfied with the result. It smells, like fake tan. The reason I sleep in my tan is because I don't want to go out smelling of it. This really stinks. The colour is also really pink-toned. I like my tans to have an olive or grey tone as it looks more natural, this just looks straight out bottle. It transfers onto your clothes. Make sure you're wearing black when you have this on, I'm just saying. Not my cup of tea, but a lot of people are loving it so I'm sure it just depends on what you like!

So there we have it, a list of my three best and three worst tans of 2014. Let me know what your favourite tans are. Maybe you've tried some of the above? Let me know what you think!

  1. Wow, the texture of the XEN TAN Absolute Luxe looks super interesting, I have never use da product like this before! I have found that XEN TAN products never seem to be as dark as what's advertised on the bottle, which can be good and bad! I'm with you on the instant tan thing, and I really don't get the point of 24h fake tan ahah x

  2. Thanks for the advice! I've tried the Dove summer glow and it was terrible. My favorite so far has been the beach sexy by Victoria Secret. Really beautiful color. But I don't think they make it anymore. Bummer. Plus the fact that I've slowly been going more natural means its much harder to find a quality self tanner that doesn't break the bank. Maybe I'll give your favorite a try for now. Thanks again.

  4. I really enjoyed reading this! I couldn't agree more about the dove gradual tanner, however I applied it it would be so streaky which was such a let down. I'm going to try the Palmers Gradual tanner next as I've heard that is a lot better and I really must try the xen tan! :) xx
